  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Helen -- I do not have enough good adjectives for this book and its illustrations. : We opened this large, luxurious book and stopped for quite some time just on the title page and end page which has a drawing of the neighborhood in sepia tones. I asked my daughter what time period she thought the book took place and we looked for clues. The ultimate verdict was the 1940's. We also talked about what mood was being conveyed by the illustrator and why. It was sad, the street was not quite well kept (weeds growing in the sidewalk and trash on the streets), and people seemed disconnected from each other. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from CT -- Great Illustrations, lackluster story telling : This is a book with amazing illustrations and an underdone story. My 6 year old at the end said 'that's it?' lol There's quite a bit one is to infer from the illustrations that's not spelled out in the story, so my 3 year old also looked perplexed at the end. They are imaginative artful kids that do sit and listen and think while we read to them. But the story also jumps from the main character being a kid to being the night gardner and a teenager/grown up. That's what confused my kids, my son was like 'but what did he do after he was a kid and before he was a good night gardner?' like he wanted more to the story. I don't mind books that lead to kids having questions, that's good for them. But it was like one page turn and you have a time leap and it ended abruptly. I think it's a sweet story, just not told in a way that gives it what it deserves to match the illustration. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2017 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from P.K -- Talented Illustrators : There is no doubt that these are talented illustrators. The artwork itself is what drew me in. The story line of the mystery expected from the title and inside cover is great... but there was really no depth or moral to the story. With illustrations this exquisite I was expecting a better read aloud. Nonetheless- I’ll be purchasing more of their books because I love exposing my children to their beautiful illustrations that much! I’ll definitely try to read these to my kids again to see if they become more interested. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from AJ -- Lovely artwork, charming story. Parents appreciated this gift : Bought this as a gift for a 2-year old family friend, in the hopes he would grow into it. In fact, he loved it, and was pointing out various animals after a few times reading through. His parents were entranced by the artwork, and appreciated the creativity and change of pace from typical kids' books. It may be some time before he fully comprehends the story, but for now it is a book that entertained the adults and was a happy distraction for the little guy. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mama Seeks Magic -- Gorgeous and enchanting! My 6-year-old is mesmerized : This is such a magical little book. The illustrations are incredible and leave you lingering on each page for a long time to take in every detail. My daughters (4 and 6) adore this book, with my 6-year-old especially asking to start it over again as soon as we get to the end. The story is very short, but unique and mesmerizing. You are left feeling like you've traveled to this sleepy little town and watched its transformation from dreary monotony to true enchantment. Wonderful! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan L. Vann -- Beautiful Book : d this to read to my preschool class. They loved it! Of course, I do, too! The pictures are the story - the night gardener comes and "trims" the trees into beautiful shapes. The community can't figure out how this happens... because it all happens at night. Each morning, they wake up and discover a new "tree". The seasons change and so the trees change, too. The night gardener leaves, but somehow, the gardening isn't done! Great story.
